If you missed the Worlds primer, then I got you: Worlds Week is Here

Let’s get into it.

PDGA World Championships

As usual, we saw lots of new names pop onto the leaderboard. But Worlds isn’t about one or two hot rounds, it’s about outlasting the competition, elements, and yourself.

Tell the boss things are going to have to wait until after Labor Day cause you got DG to watch. So make sure the fridge is stocked and Saturday’s blocked off to be prepped for every second of final round.

CURRENT STANDINGS - *SPOILERS*

MPO/ One round in, it was a tight race. 5 big arms tied at double digits (1062 rated) - Eagle McMahon, Garrett Gurthie, Aaron Gossage, Anthony Barela, & VäinÜ Mäkelä.

But across town, Tristan Tanner put on a show at Emporia Country Club. With 14 birdies, he shot a blistering -13 (1087 rated) in B Pool.

FYI every Worlds splits players up by pools due to the massive divisions. Tanner was on the wrong side of the cut line with his 1004 rating but fought back with vengeance to be solo leader.

In Round 2, the distance FHs came out to play. Ricky Wysocki moved from 52nd to 6th with a -12 (1072 rated), while Gossage threw 85% FH reaching -10 and the lead.

Starting today, the pools have been reshuffled. With his -7 round at Jones, Tanner will join Gossage both at -20 total.

There’s plenty of golf left, so it’s still open season. The mental grind comes into effect starting today, and it’s up to the Coloradans to prove themselves.

FPO/ The Europeans came out strong for Worlds. Henna Blomroos reminded everyone of her distance with an early round of -8 (1009 rated).

But her new course record was easily blown past by Kristin Tattar who reached -10 (1024 rated) hours later. It looked like both their injuries weren’t a limiting factor.

Then in Round 2, Tattar started to pull away. But shying away from painful BHs and making mistakes on the back 9, she allowed others to stay within striking distance.

Both starting outside the top 10, Paige Pierce & Catrina Allen climbed up 7 & 23 spots respectively. Pierce sits in 4th, while Allen in 8th thanks to her hot -7 round (1003 rated) yesterday.

STANDOUT PLAYER

Through “bomber-style” courses and a pulled groin, Ohn Scoggins is making moves. Seeming unlikely, she actually performs well at tracks outside her distance potential (e.g. Portland Open).

In Round 1, she shot -4 (979 rated) then in Round 2 she made up 5 spots shooting -5 (988 rated). Her chances to win are slim, but best believe she’s going to persevere and take a shot at it. Continue to watch her performance and injury status.

HIGHLIGHT

From having a massive heart attack to 2022 Masters World Champ, JohnE McCray continues his legendary career with an ace on Hole 12, Round 1. Following it up, Round 2 saw lots of near aces at ECC.

Stat That - Course Records

There isn’t a week that goes by where commentators say, “That’s a new course record.” Players’ skills are increasing faster than ever, and new records are common.

But there’s one name that seems to pair perfectly with the phrase. As per The Upshot, Paul McBeth’s done it 7 times this season.

This has been his main 2022 storyline. He underperforms then busts out a record-breaking round when he’s no longer in contention.

With the pressure is off, McBeast comes out to play. This week is no different, and it’ll take course records for players to separate themselves from the crowded leaderboards.

Already this week, there are new course records set on both Jones & ECC from both divisions. Settle in for plenty more fireworks to close the week.

Random Dubs

1️⃣ This is the highest projected payout for the World Championship. The event is anticipating >$200k attributing the number to spectators.

It’ll be hard for Emporia, KS to match the crowd’s energy from 2021 Worlds but expect a large gallery come Saturday. For reference, this gets close to the 2021 DGPT Championship total of $250k.

2️⃣ Out of Sweden, SenseBlend has been fine tuning a DG app for months. They originally set out to investigate biomechanics and create a visualization of the throw.

Instead, they’ve developed an app that collects real-time data from a smart watch. It measures your putting timing and accelerations with instant feedback if you’ve made a “good” or “bad” putt.

It also gives audio cues to ensure you’re hitting your down and up stroke at the correct times. It’s probably not the secret weapon to putt like Gannon Buhr, but it’s a step in the right direction. Give their tutorial a watch.

Meme of the Week
