The Unknown Big Arm

Pop Quiz: What’s one thing that gets disc golfers all hot and bothered?

No, not Margot RobbieBig Bombs.

This is Nick Krush. He’s 26 years old and a track athlete (100m/200m). Since the age of 14, he’s played disc golf on and off but recently made it his mission to throw world-class distance.

In 3 months, he took his 360° BH from 500 ft to >700 ft. An improvement of 200 ft is impressive for anyone, but when you reach that level, it’s baffling.

For now, this track star has no interest in tournaments, but he’s looking into distance comps. Following his “Road to 700ft” series, it’s clear that he has yet to reach his ceiling.

So how do we crush like Krush?

  • Be shredded to Jeremy Allen White levels

  • Always warm up and use standstills

  • Throw Pro & GStar Destroyers

  • Read “The Good Swing - Fundamentals of Disc Golf Backhand Form” (107 pages)

  • Be a form nerd: record yourself, get advice from DGCR gurus (like Seabas22), and do fieldwork

Speaking of Seabas22, he just added another great drill to his repertoire: The Whip Step Drill. It reinforces that your lead hip pulls your throwing shoulder.

  1. Perpendicular to the target, walk into a lunge by leading with your center of gravity

  2. Coil your torso/throwing arm, catch yourself, then push back as your shoulder swings through

  3. Repeat the motion to feel your butt pulling your shoulder

Tip: Use a medium-sized step to get the feeling right. Watch his full video (8 min) for more.

👉 Powergrip’s Highlight: Trash Panda Ice Inner Core (2|4|-0.5|0)
When searching for a straight putter, recommendations include the Proxy, Pure, or Watt. But none of them hold a candle to the Inner Core.

This premium plastic putter is not only dead-straight but it’s made from 100% recycled plastics. Compared to the OG blue runs, this iced-out version flies slightly more true and stable.

If you’re tired of your Glitch flipping one too many times, then grab this new throwing putter. Your game will thank you for it as will the planet.

And if you’re already an Inner Core fanboy, then get a backup or two. The fine folks at Trash Panda are taking their next giant leap: Manufacturing their discs themselves.

QUICK HITS

1️⃣ We’re 16 days from the first throw on the Pro Tour. In the weeks leading up to sunny FL, many touring pros have already started their seasons on the right foot.

Over the weekend, there were 3 tournaments of note. Since not all the coverage is out, here are some spoiler-free takeaways (click on each for its results):

MX Disc Golf Championships (A-Tier)
Already released on GK Pro, we got our first look at the new PDGA rule of an aggregate playoff. The biggest tournament in Mexico ended with 2 players battling it out over 4 holes in front of an excited crowd.

11th Annual Maricopa Open (A-Tier)
This birdie-or-die course gave Team DGA their spotlight. Any concerns of Andrew Marwede from last week’s back spasm were mostly forgotten.

Taupō Classic (B-Tier)
The first stop of the Tour Down Under was momentous not just for the Kiwis playing or watching. But besides the beautiful golf, those who made the trip are enjoying everything that New Zealand has to offer.

Juliana Korver did the traditional rite of passage with some bungee jumping.

2️⃣ Even with Contract Season over, it’s never too late to make moves. Here are some of the latest quick hitters this preseason:

1/ Kristin Tattar announced her sponsorship by Porsche Estonia. While it’s essentially a free car lease, not many people drive around a Porsche Macan with their name on it. She continues to reach celebrity-level status in her home country.

2/ Discraft finally released their Elite Team roster. It’s jam-packed with the same heavy hitters.

As for actual life updates, Paul Ulibarri & his wife Sarah (Wysocki) are expecting a UliBaby in August. And Paige Pierce is fast-tracking the road to recovery.

3/ Team MVP just added a dark horse to their team but not of the Brodie variety. Joey Temali (current rating: 1015) will be taking his talents on Tour with a bag full of GYRO.

With a name like that, his past accomplishments are hard to forget:

  • Cameraman for JomezPro

  • Content producer for DGPT/DGN

  • Project Media Coordinator for the Paul McBeth Foundation

  • Beating Bossman McBeth by 2 strokes at the 2023 Estonian Open

4/ Early last year, Jeremy Rusco - founder of Dynamic Discs - came into a windfall of cash after the House of Discs acquisition. And like any disc golf enthusiast, what does he do with that money?

He goes looking for a course to buy, specifically, the Emporia Country Club. The property includes the clubhouse, restaurant, 9-hole golf course, and famous DDO course.

But what many don’t realize is this is his 2nd attempt at the purchase. Exactly a year ago, he offered to buy the Club but it never went through.

This time around, it’s looking promising. So what’s he planning?

Being the centerpiece of DD’s annual events, it could be turned into a true destination wonderland. Either way, we’ll know tomorrow when Rusco joins the local radio station for a Q&A.
