đź‘€ The contracts are coming
Contracts watch, New Plastic, Pro Tips, and Fish's forehand rollers.
Hello and welcome to week 3 of the off-season. New player contracts have been rolling in, and there’s more big names to come. But first, turn on multi-factor authentication for EVERYTHING.
Player Contracts Watch
The first contract announcements came last week:
Gavin Rathbun signed a 2-year contract with Dynamic Discs. His breakout 2021 season was cut short due to shoulder injury/surgery. He’s feeling pretty good on the road to recovery but plans to skip the first Pro Tour event of the season, Las Vegas Challenge (Feb 24th).
Eric Oakley surprised many by announcing his departure from Dynamic Discs. Speaking with Cory Murrell (@johnnydiscgolf), Oakley described the separation as mutual. They were moving in two different directions, and DD allowed his contract to end 1 year early. Stephen Scansaroli from Disc Golf Player Management Group (DGPM) worked with Oakley to find a new, more fitting contract. Infinite Discs signed Oakley to a 1 year contract with an informal commitment to a more long term deal. Infinite will release 2 tour series discs for Oakley. The first will be the Alpaca, followed by a potentially new disc made by Innova. With many other players partnering with DGPM, we should expect more big names to announce new contracts soon.
Matt Orum - What a disaster of an announcement from Prodigy. Matty-O was on their team for the past 4 seasons. Their goodbye announcement on Instagram was “incredibly unprofessional,” and his new sponsor had a big announcement in the works. Prodigy has since deleted the post, and Westside Discs announced his 2-year contract shortly after. Roll Tide!
Gregg Barsby announced his 3-year contract extension with Innova this week. The world champ will remain on the Star Team and continue to throw his Signature Roadrunner and Tour Series Eagle.
New Plastic
The season of giving is here and so are the Black Friday deals. Almost all the distributors & manufacturers have a mystery box. Whether you love or hate them, they’re here to stay and always sell out. But many are questioning the prices this year, so do your research and be wary of deals. You can find a large list here.
And for the disc golfer in your life (or yourself), reference the UDisc Gift Guide for recommendations. Ones we highly recommend:
Reusable hand warmer
Practice basket (if you’re feeling generous)
Stock alert 🚨
If stock discs are more your speed, here’s the latest stock alert from the hardest working Redditor, u/catsforchrist.
Recent PDGA Approved Discs
Løft Discs adds a second disc to their lineup. To compliment their Kickstarter funded Hydrogen putter, they recently had the Bohrium approved. It’s a max speed distance driver designed to push a few limits on the PDGA standards. Løft plans to launch another Kickstarter campaign for Bohrium production.
Innova gets FD lookalike approved, and they’re not trying to hide it. It’s temp name is “Fairway Disc.” But this new disc may not be the Innova FD people are hoping for… Based off the measurements, it doesn’t look like an FD. Flight numbers haven’t been announced, but it might be a unique disc to Innova’s vast fairway lineup. For those wanting an FD but don’t want to shell out for Italian plastic, the new Latitude 64 Glory might be a match.
Random Triples (Pro-tip edition)
Gyro Balls. Hailey King is an advocate for these gyro exercisers, as well as AJ Risley. Gyro balls are used to strengthen grip, forearm, and finger strength. They can help during rehab for carpal tunnel and arthritis. AJ, still coming off an injury, appeared in this week’s SmashBoxxTV podcast. He’s not ready to commit to the tour full-time as a player, but will continue to do more sideline stuff (podcasts, clinics, and video series) until then. His contract with DD is up at the end of this year but has no plans to change sponsors.
DO follow Avery Jenkins on Untappd. Simon Lizotte and Avery Jenkins were on The Nick & Matt Show last week talking about their upcoming project with DGN, “Finding the Line.” They shot several days of vlogs while designing a new DiscGolfPark course in Nashua, NH. Simon also announced his latest foray into podcasting, “Simon Says.”
Fish’s FH rollers: “I meant to do that.”
