Email Read Time: 5 Minutes & 08 Seconds
Weāre nearing that time of year. This week, Iām giving you a taste of the off-season with only one edition. Next week will be the same with a USDGC preview before the event starts.
Letās get into it.
TOUR COVERAGE
US Womenās Disc Golf Championships (Major)
RESULTS - š KRISTIN TATTAR
From legends to juniors & rain to shine, this weekend was a wonderful moment for womenās disc golf. In no particular order, here are the storylines you should remember or you may have missed:
1 - A facility fit for a Major.
2 hours north of Charlotte, NC, Cedarock Park and its 3 courses hosted 337 women who traveled far and wide. The Regulator course bared its teeth against the 90 pros.
It was one of the hardest-ever tracks for a USWDGC. To put it in perspective, last weekās final round at Maple Hill had 61% of holes averaging over par. The Regulatorās final round had 83%.
Itās hardā¦ Like you can take a double bogey on every hole if you miss the line.
Aside from the technicality, the weather added to the mental struggles. Tropical Storm Ophelia brought wind and rain that affected portions of Friday and all of Saturday.
Regardless of their doubles, triples, and even quad bogeys, pros gave the course great acclaim. This never-before-seen track combined many beloved elements from courses already on Tour.
For only being in the ground for 2 months, The Regulator shows great promise. As it breaks in further, it should become a place where the Tour looks to make a mainstay.
2 - The first* FPO Grand Slam.
Kristin Tattar did it. She successfully completed the 1st official Grand Slam by winning all 4 Majors in a single season. And along the way, she accomplished so much more:
To cap it off, this win pushed her 2023 earnings past $100k for the 2nd year in a row. Tattar is the 1st player ever (man or woman) to hit 6 figures in a year twice let alone back-to-back.
While these headlines and stats went off, some side convos were being had and questions brought upā¦
For reference, McBeth is talking about Juliana Korver in 1999 and Des Reading in 2002 when they swept the Majors in a single season. There were only 2 FPO Majors in those years, but their accomplishments still stand.
Semantics aside, this is only the beginning of Tattarās career. She may have another 5 or even 10 years of dominance, and we have so much to learn from her.
3 - The challengers gave it their all.
Out the gate, Blomroos was throwing the disc like no other. It was her weekend to shine, and she held off Tattar until the final hole of Round 3.
It was a heartbreaking hole that ended with a snowman on the par 4. But aside from the 4-stroke swing, Blomroos finished out Sunday and secured her 1st podium of the season.
As for someone who knows the podium well, Scoggins deserves much praise. So far, sheās had 12 podium finishes including 2 wins (Silver & Playoff).
Sheās looking to add more to this successful season, but the only thing that may be holding her back is tendonitis. While clutching and massaging her arm, she finished with a -10 (1008 rated) course record on Sunday.
Ignoring the upcoming off-week, Scoggins is hitting up the Charlotte A-Tier (Carolina Clash). And sheās not going to stop grinding until the final putt in 2.5 weeks at the Tour Championships.
4 - The battle of legends.
Behind the scenes, the legends of our game were duking it out. Jen Allen added a 3rd FP40 Major win to her lengthy career, while Des Reading fought off Korver bringing her record to 5-1 against JK at US Womenās.
FP40/ š„Jennifer Allen (+14) š„Stephanie Vincent (+25) š„Becky Harris (+50)
FP50/ š„Des Reading (-29) š„Juliana Korver (-19) š„Michelle Green (-17)
HIGHLIGHT
Instead of a highlight this week, take a moment to soak in Kristin Tattarās Grand Slam.
POWERED BY POWERGRIP USA
Fresh Plastic
š Powergripās Highlight: Trash Panda Dune (5|5|-1|0)
The 2nd disc in Trash Pandaās lineup is now available at Powergrip USA.
For those unfamiliar, this brandās focus is to be as sustainable as possible starting with 100% recycled plastic. And like their 1st mold (Inner Core), the Dune was designed to be one of the most straightest mids.
They were successful. This disc is straight-flying, easy to throw, and ever so slightly US. Itās like many of the other dead-straight mids: Wombat3, MD1, & Hex.
As for the recycled plastic, itās extremely unique and unlike anything stocked at Powergrip USA. With some gumminess, the plastic feels almost slick while maintaining a grippy texture.
Itās hard to explain if youāve never held one before. So feel it for yourself and shop Powergrip USA!
PUTTING TIPS & USDGC MONDAY
Random Dubs
1ļøā£ If you deal with tournament anxiety and are blessed with long arms, then you need to switch to Gannon Buhrās āunorthodoxā style of putt. Drawing down to his left hip, he pops the disc off his fingers by driving with his elbow and using his long arm lever.
During an interview with Cory Murrell, he credits his putting style to his 2022 USDGC win. Down the stretch, Buhr made 3 crucial putts as Niklas Anttila missed.
Compared to Anttilaās spin putt, Buhr has a more compact stroke. Without much leg involvement, Buhr has fewer moving parts that can be affected by sky-high nerves when going for a huge win.
2ļøā£ In less than a week, the last Major event (USDGC) has its festivities kicking off. Its famous Monday Qualifier will have 120 players battling for 5 spots in the actual tournament that starts on Thursday.
Last year, the score to beat was +1 when Andrew Fish snagged the last spot. This year, the qualifier will be featured during DGNās live preview show on Monday (10/2).
And if youāre fortunate enough to be there in person, the US Distance Championship is happening the same day. Featuring the longest throwers, the comp will be free to spectators and be covered by JomezPro in post-produced fashion.
