Let’s get into it.
Who is Ohn Scoggins?
You’ve seen her fun celebrations and bubbly interviews, but what do you know about Ohn Scoggins? She spoke on PDGA Radio about her story.
From the country of Laos, Scoggins first arrived in the US at the age of 26. She soon picked up disc golf with her husband who was already obsessed in 2010.
Eventually, she traded playing for working as a licensed massage therapist for years. But with the pandemic, she fell back in love and has been grinding ever since.
Now she’s 41 years old, 2x Masters World Champ, and Top 10 on Tour. But recently, her story went through a confusing controversy.
At her latest Worlds win, she was issued a “courtesy warning” by the TD for insulting a parking attendant with “the finger.” Clearing up the story on The Nick & Matt Show, Scoggins said the story was completely false.
She was running late for her final tee time and got mixed signals on the parking situation. Finally getting dropped off by her husband, Scoggins started her round but was warned on Hole 1.
Nothing of note resulted, but does it set a confusing precedent for courtesy violations before/after the round? Dixon Jowers and many others are still confused about where the line gets drawn.
Discraft’s Great Lakes Open
PREVIEW (7/29-31)
It’s going to be hard following one of the best battles in history, but the Tour moves fast and DGLO could do it. All week players have raced back to the States for Discraft’s premier event in Milford, MI.
Hopefully, they’ve caught their breath and fixed any jet lag, cause the course this weekend is physical. The Toboggan course is infamous in players’ hearts with its hills, distance shots, and picturesque holes.
In their 40th year of the event, the course has a few tweaks that will make it play harder. But in typical fashion, there’s sure to be tight battles and gravity-defying bombs.
Being in the land of Discraft, you know that Nate Heinold and crew will pull out all the stops. The number of spectator tickets is over 2k and growing.
So there’s nothing left to do, but to soak in the jaw-dropping shots and drama-filled rounds that will certainly make history this weekend.
LAST YEAR RECAP
MPO/ Eagle McMahon was not in any pain last year. He threw FH distance shots to traverse the elevation and stayed on top of the clustered leaderboard.
Into the final round, Kyle Klein was the sole challenger to McMahon defending his 2020 title. Even while wearing McMahon’s signature jersey, Klein couldn't keep up with McMahon.
FPO/ Paige Pierce opened up a small lead over the other power throwers, Kristin Tattar & Catrina Allen. Applying some pressure, Tattar went on to close the lead to 2 after Moving Day.
But in the final round, Tattar was feeling it. She matched Pierce’s intensity and sealed the deal with a 400’ drive, 300’ upshot, and 50’ putt to eagle Hole 17. Giving her the 1-stroke advantage she needed to par out and win her 1st ever DGPT Elite Series.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Neither winner is returning this year. So we can expect the likes of Pierce, Allen, & King at the top due to their distance advantage.
But Allen will be the one to watch. Her distance and physical stamina can be the difference maker. And not to forget she’s won this event 4 times.
It goes without saying that McBeth will be hot. His fire after losing paired with his expertise at Toboggan means he’s not settling for anything but 1st.
You’ll be able to watch live all weekend on DGN. Or on next-day coverage from JomezPro, Gatekeeper Media, and GK Pro.
Question of the Week
At the European Open, the FPO and MPO played on the same layout. Paige Pierce said she wants to see more courses like this for women, but others would argue the opposite… For reference, Pierce finished at +12 to win at The Beast.
Random Dubs
1️⃣ On SmashboxxTV, Pierce finally dropped more info about her feature-length documentary - FIERCE. This studio-quality, celebrity-narrated film will be released to DGN on August 10th.
Her main goal with this project was to get the outside world to see disc golf and understand why we love the sport. On her way there, she has to get it seen by a “paid audience” - DGN subscribers.
With paying viewers, it will get considered by bigger platforms like Netflix. So if you paid DGN for one month just to watch the European Open, then you’re in luck and can watch FIERCE in two weeks.
2️⃣ For something right now, Disc Golf Ledger released their latest mini-doc on New Jersey’s newest course designed by Steve Brinster: Farmstead Golf & Country Club [8 min].
Meme of the Week
