If you missed the DGLO primer, then I got you: Most Fun Wins

Let’s get into it.

Discraft’s Great Lakes Open

RESULTS - 🏆CALVIN HEIMBURG & NATALIE RYAN

It wasn’t hard for DGLO to follow up the European Open. With perfect weather, players tried to shred but the Toboggan hills shredded back.

Described as “thicker than anywhere else,” the Michigan rough was something. From poison ivy, stinging nettles, and thorns, it gave pros difficulties and bogeys.

MPO/ The event started with a redemption arc for Kyle “The Michigan Kid” Klein & Corey Ellis with them leading at -10 (rated 1071). Following closely behind was Paul McBeth & Calvin Heimburg.

The 2nd round was more of the same, but Klein fell off with 3 bogeys to end Moving Day. And Heimburg stepped into the empty slot to tie Ellis at -16 total.

Championship Sunday was a tale as old as time. We saw McBeth fail to enter McBeast mode, Lizotte go to “Simon Lines”, and probably the biggest US gallery ever seen.

But the best was saved for last… With a 2-stroke lead and 2 to play, Heimburg missed routine shots to open the door for a playoff with Ellis. But immediately into the playoff, Ellis threw OB by a cm.

And just like that, Heimburg laid up for his 2nd playoff win of the season. A pattern is forming, and he even admits to purposefully doing it for the fans.

FPO/ In Round 1, it was birdies galore for Paige Pierce & Catrina Allen. They each had 8 birdies and 1 bogey to end tied at the top with 997 rated rounds.

The next day, only Natalie Ryan popped off with a -9 (1007 rated) to separate herself from the field with 4 strokes. But it was still anybody’s to win come Sunday.

Then with Ohn Scoggins charging from chase card, Ryan held on tight to take down her 1st ever DGPT win. She played like a winner and confidently pushed forward to this historic victory.

STANDOUT PLAYER

Emily Beach can throw the disc far. She’s a pure lefty off the tee but has a righty FH for scramble situations.

Those skills and many more helped her tie for 2nd at the Toboggan. Before this weekend, she was solidly in 1st place for DGPT Rookie of the Year and with this finish it’s all but decided.

HIGHLIGHT

With ice in his veins, Heimburg pushed for the win with a bullseye on Hole 13.

Controversial Topic

Alright, let’s try to navigate this. After the crowning of a new FPO champion on Sunday, there were many conversations arguments that popped up.

This topic is not new, and I have zero intention to create divisiveness. Here are some things being shared…

  • Many touring FPO pros have expressed their support for the current set of rules and trust in the PDGA

  • ONE woman said, there is “not enough known about gender and physicality” to make a fair ruling

  • The PDGA Board relies on the Medical Committee to provide recommendations

  • All touring pros are real people

So no matter your opinion, the rules are currently the rules. If you think it’s time to further discuss transgender women in gender-protected divisions, then go for it.

The PDGA has no plans to make any changes until at least 2023.

Fresh Plastic

Sponsored by Powergrip USA… A PRETTY GOOD disc golf shop. Europe’s largest store now in the US.

👉 Powergrip’s Highlight: Westside Discs VIP Ice Bear (8|6|-0.5|2.5)It’s been a while since Westside has had a new mold. Approved in Oct 2021, the Bear is finally getting its 1st run release this Thursday (8/4) at noon ET.

This disc is unique. It’s not too small. It’s not too wide. It’s just right. The 8-speed rim width should be a new favorite to all throwers.

Besides being easy to hold in any grip, the Bear is quite flat. Westside has figured out how to create a very glidey disc without the dome.

This disc is basically a Discmania PD without the dump. They feel similar, but this has a touch of turn followed by smooth fade.

And for those who recently got dropped by a sponsor but still love their plastic, the Clash Discs Popcorn (3|3|0|1) is hard to beat. Even Nikko Locastro is still throwing his Popcorn all over Sweden while pursuing counseling.

The buttery mold comes in Hardy (baseline) & Steady (premium) plastic. It’s been very popularity with its nice glide, straight flight, and fast feel for a putter.

Random Dubs

1️⃣ Nate Sexton is known for many things including the Running It Podcast with Jarrett Orr. Sexton warned on all the socials that Orr may or may not be running a scam through the podcast.

Unfortunately, that means we won’t be treated to Sexton’s wealth of knowledge and deep connections anytime soon. Maybe this will open the door for JomezPro to start another new podcast - like Paige Pierce’s Approachable.

Fortunately, there’s recent news that Brian Earhart’s The Flight Diary will be returning bigger and better than ever. If you’re not familiar, then listen to old episodes now.

2️⃣ On The Trevor Staub Show, Robbie C - Innova Polecat peddler & YouTuber - gave his sales pitch on why you should care about the infamous carnival lid.

  1. There is no disc that will teach you “touch” better

  2. It will make you confident from 75’ and in

  3. When it hits a tree, it doesn’t kick far

*Pro Tip* - Do NOT fan grip this disc. Power grip only.
