NEWS
Canada Disc Golf Tour
Just in case you needed another acronym to memorize in the pro disc golf scene: the Canada Disc Golf Tour (CDGT) officially launched as the country’s first professional tour.
Created by Andre Lodder & Matt Lisac, this 1st season encompass 9 events across the huge country. They wanted to give Canadian pros a platform to hone their skills and become international threats.
Players can compete locally without pricey travel until they’re ready to join the big leagues in Europe or the USA. As a bonus, the Tour gets to showcase the gorgeous landscape Canada provides (without wildfires 🤞).
One, in particular, is Raptors Knoll in Langley Township, British Columbia. Next to P.E.I.’s legendary Hillcrest Farm, it’s highly regarded as one of the best courses in the country.
Come late July, big names like Scott Withers, Paul Ulibarri, and Carter Ahrens are making the pilgrimage and playing in the British Columbia Open. If you’re like me and can’t get enough disc golf, then soak in “The Great White North” with the CDGT.
Post-produced rounds of its events are posted on the Parked Pro YT channel. The inaugural tournament has been published in its entirety.
Watch Canada’s finest like Thomas Gilbert & Max Regitnig throw bombs all over Kamloops, British Columbia. Maybe one day, every country will have its own professional tour.
TOUR COVERAGE
Zoo Town Open (Silver)
PREVIEW (6/9-11)
Pack your hiking boots and get ready to hit the mountain. Now in its 17th year as Missoula’s premier event, the Zoo Town Open has been added to the Tour.
Since Covid, this tournament has been out of the spotlight and run mostly as a local B-Tier, but it’s back with “the benchmark [course] for mountain golf.” For 3 days, the Blue Mountain DGC will provide stunning mountain views and no shortage of dramatic elevation changes.
Initially a tone pole course in 1992, this National Forest property was converted into bucket list status in 2007. For years now, it has been ranked as MT’s #1 course on UDisc.
If this course seems familiar, then you’ve likely seen Colten Montgomery’s ridiculous 570ft ace on Hole 10. Going down 50ft of elevation, his C-line DD3 caused echoes of chains throughout the canyon.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
With this being a new Tour stop, last year’s results don’t give us much insight. But back in 2019, Calvin Heimburg put away the competition by 7 strokes.
While averaging -11 per round, he beat out the likes of James Conrad, Brian Earhart, and Garrett Gurthie (2018 ZTO winner). If you can throw a mile and manage elevation, then you can add a Silver win to your PDGA page.
With the West Coast Swing over, the field looks a bit sparse compared to the recent event. But bomber Anthony Barela has experience with similar Northern AZ courses and FH magician Andrew Marwede who aced Hole 9 (630ft) in practice will put their OS drivers to the test.
As for FPO, Sai Ananda has enough momentum to carry her into at least a podium finish. She’s clearly becoming more comfortable on Tour and has the skills to chase Tattar up the leaderboard.
POWERED BY POWERGRIP USA
Tour Europe like McBeth
Being the 1st disc golf retailer to operate on 2 continents, Powergrip’s worldly efforts know no bounds. Their sponsored team spans from Finnish bomber Eveliina Salonen to North Carolinian Big Jerm.
Besides their team members, Powergrip USA has one of the most expansive selections of plastic from across the pond. It ranges from Berg Gang memberships to Clash Discs tasty morsels.
ACE CONTEST & FORM TIPS
Random Dubs
1️⃣ Ace contests are all the rage now. Like MVP Open’s million-dollar shot, the upcoming Des Moines Challenge will have a 500ft ace contest.
Happening after Round 1 on 6/23, the BroncThrow will have 8 MPO and 8 FPO players chosen by the fans throwing for a brand new Ford Bronco Sport. As of yesterday, the following players had the top 3 number of votes:
Ben Callaway (10,444 votes) & Missy Gannon (3,337 votes)
Brodie Smith (9,003) & Jennifer Allen (3,270)
Ezra Aderhold (3,050) & Rebecca Cox (2,576)
As per its rules, you can vote for as many players as you would like, and you can vote as many times as you want. So get clicking and tune in later this month to see someone hopefully touring in style.
Vote here. Voting ends Wednesday, June 21 at 5pm CST.
2️⃣ Let’s talk about a BH form mechanic that many still get wrong - Tee box geometry. Months ago, Robbie C tackled this topic in a form video.
He believes that your start and end points on the tee pad are dictated by the shot shape you’re throwing. A proper run-up direction positions the body to prevent rounding, so for righty BH…
Anhyzer/Turnover = from the back right to the front left of the tee pad
Straight shot = from middle to middle
Hyzer = from the back left to the front right
Just last week, Jaani Länsiö (DG Spin Doctor) backed up Robbie’s teachings but framed them differently. In short, you should always take a straight run-up and aim with the legs.
Your “train tracks” should point towards your intended target. To create the different shot shapes, you bend at the waist to put your disc on hyzer or anhyzer.
