💥 Only Throw Bombs Open

Money Talks, Micro Plastics, and Concrete Thieves

Hello and welcome, this is The Players Meeting. Your way to convince your friends that you’re in Paul McBeth’s DMs.Email Read Time: 5 Minutes & 11 Seconds

If you missed the OTB Open primer, then I got you: Is FPO more exciting than MPO?

Let’s get into it.

OTB Open

RESULTS - 🏆 SIMON LIZOTTE & PAIGE PIERCE

MPO/ Another Elite Series, another 1st round with wind advisory conditions. But a CA native who was born with a disc in hand, Cody Kirkland, showed why it runs in his blood. He shot -7 (1064 rated).

Then conditions got ideal. Simon Lizotte started hot and showed flashes of his past self. He threw “Simon Lines”, made putts, and eventually cooled off to hold the lead into Sunday.

In the final round, Lizotte “felt like things were going [his] way and no one else’s.” Even with 3 other bombers on the card, he stayed mostly clean and calm to take down his 1st Pro Tour win in 4 years.

Lizotte didn’t only win for all the dads out there, he won for everyone.

FPO/ After 2 days, you couldn’t convince a soul that Paige Pierce wasn’t going to run away with it. She shot this season’s highest-rated FPO round of -10 (1028 rated) on Saturday.

That gave her a 9-stroke lead over Natalie Ryan. Pierce only had to shoot a clean round of even par to secure back-to-back OTB Open wins.

And she did just that, but it wasn’t the stress-free round expected. Ryan played aggressive and caught up to Pierce after Hole 15.

The two were tied with only 3 holes left. But Ryan made more mistakes than Pierce in that home stretch and couldn’t secure her 1st Pro Tour win.

STANDOUT PLAYERS

1/ Last year’s standout player at this event was Aaron Gossage. He backed up that 2021 debut with another great performance. Managing solo 3rd place, he was just a few nervy, missed putts from Lizotte.

2/ Ricky Wysocki was out there “essentially playing on one leg.” Watching him limp around the course, it was crazy seeing him throw bombs and finish in 5th.

He’s currently in San Diego, CA getting his swelled knee MRI’d and drained. But for now, he plans to be in contention at the Portland Open in 2 weeks.

HIGHLIGHT

Cody Kirkland’s throw-in for a 318ft eagle on Hole 17 in Round 1.

How to Fund a Tour Stop

There are hundreds of individuals - usually volunteers - who take on the thankless role of Tournament Director (TD). Every Tour Stop & local event has one or two who coordinate everything.

On The Upshot, OTB Open’s co-TDs (Sean Jack & Shawn Mercy) gave us a peek behind the curtain. Their event company, 1000 Rated Productions (1RP), runs high-quality tournaments and has big plans for the next 3-5 years.

Here are some money details from OTB Open:

  • $15k rental cost for 12 days at Swenson Park Golf Course

  • $15k cost to build the new teepad foundations

  • OTB (title sponsor) splits 50% of event stamped discs’ profits with 1RP. There are over $200k of discs from MVP that will pay out these royalties = ~$25k revenue

  • ~20 vendors pay a $500-1k fee to 1RP to attend = ~$15k revenue

  • $25k revenue as cash from MVP to be the presenting sponsor

  • $25k revenue from the amateur tournament the week prior

  • Overall, the event’s expenses were about $120k with anticipated revenue of $135k

  • No salary was taken for the two TDs. Any profit goes back into 1RP

While the pair didn’t break everything down, they shined a light on what goes into a Tour stop. And with their combined passion, maybe they’re the right people to make their vision come true…

The OTB Open could be our Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Fresh Plastic

Insights by Daddy Disc Golf. SHOP THE SHACK for the latest!

👨‍🏫 Daddy’s Highlight: MVP Fission PlasticContinuing to push the envelope, MVP has gotten their most difficult to produce plastic in an amazing spot. “Fission™ Microbubble Technology produces an ultralight core with evenly distributed and imperceptible weight reduction microbubbles.”

To simplify it, you can throw these discs at lighter weights without worrying about turning them over. Our noodle arms can finally get these discs to their designed speed and flight.

MVP is releasing 2 molds in this plastic tomorrow (5/25). The Fission Crave (6.5|5|-1|1) and Octane (13|5|-1.5|2) will be available for sale through your favorite retailers.

Not to be shown up by MVP or Innova’s Power Disc 2, Discmania is re-releasing their Originals PD (10|4|0|3) in Italian plastic today at 11AM EST. The PD is an asset in all Discmania bags like how Thunderbirds & Anax’s are elsewhere.

In the stiffer Ferrari plastic, this disc is a reliable flyer for all arm speeds. Faster arms will get the advertised straight distance with reliable finish. And to everyone else, it’s a great hyzer release disc or wind fighter.

Random Dubs

1️⃣ Late last week, Bert Kreischer appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience and announced his intentions of sponsoring a $1M payout tournament.

Let’s not beat a dead horse. Instead, spend 18min watching the most helpful FH clinic you’ll ever see with a former baseball pitcher.
