TOUR COVERAGE
Discmania Open (Silver)

RESULTS - 🏆EAGLE MCMAHON & ELLA HANSEN

This was the last Silver of the season. While many pros took advantage of the “off-week” elsewhere, 48 road warriors soaked in Canada’s smallest province.

In no particular order, here are the storylines you should remember or you may have missed:

1 - The Rose Valley course showed potential.

On September 24, 2022, Hurricane Fiona hit Prince Edward Island and shredded the disc golf haven. Every course saw major damage.

50 weeks later, this Silver Event showed off what the island has to offer with a newly fixed Rose Valley. Hundreds of hours led to its success and the storm’s remnants could still be seen on coverage.

While it was clearly still raw, the manicured open fairways paired beautifully with the tightest gaps on Tour. Most of the holes averaged over par with Hole 16 hitting an astonishing +1.5 in Saturday’s windy round.

Talking with players, Ben Smith (TD/Course designer) admitted holes needed to go up in par. He went as far as attempting to change them but couldn’t in time.

The big question remains though… Will this remote destination be on Tour again? Most agree that there’s room for improvement, but the potential is clear.

If the Tour can find a spot in the schedule to highlight disc golf outside of the US, then PEI needs to be there. The event’s sponsor - Discmania - certainly hopes so.

2 - A 1st win is a 1st win.

After almost 3 seasons and 42 Tour events, Ella Hansen got the monkey off her back. The 10+ hour drive from Worlds was well worth it for the many Handpies and her 1st DGPT win.

In the field of 7, Hansen averaged 12 points below her rating of 965. While she technically played better in other recent events (960 at Worlds, 997 at DGLO), this performance was about closing out a win.

Now, she’s going into Maple Hill’s 4-day Playoff Event with experience and confidence to continue her success. She also moved up to 4th in DGPT standings and passed fellow distance bomber, Holyn Handley.

I really have a hunger to win, and I also want to beat Holyn to the win… Whoever wins the 1st Elite/Major gets to dye the other person’s hair whatever color they want.

3 - The juice was worth the squeeze.

Slated to live commentate and skip playing, Juliana Korver (5X and defending FP50 World Champ) realized she could “benefit greatly points-wise by playing.” She was right.

Taking the last podium spot, Korver moved up 3 spots into the qualifying bubble for the Tour Championship in 4 weeks. Now, she only has this weekend to hold off her challengers in Sai Ananda, Emily Beach, & Holly Finley.

4 - The Canadian crowd got their money’s worth.

This event showed signs of a blooming new rivalry between the next greats. Say goodbye to McBeth vs. Wysocki, and say hello to McMahon vs. I. Robinson.

For the 2nd week in a row, the pair demonstrated opposite approaches to playing a course. As McMahon “broke” fairways with towering hyzers, Robinson smoothed mids straight down the gut.

By Sunday, Robinson figured out the difficult course and went bogey-free to push into the longest playoff in a while. In the endless loop of Holes 1 & 18, the two perfectionists executed routine shots.

It was a race to who broke first. After stepping up to Hole 18 for the 4th time in an hour, Robinson cracked and threw into the hazard.

The mental battle was over, and McMahon soaked in his 2nd win of the season. Clearly, it was a huge relief as he’s been close for months now.

HIGHLIGHT

When you hit your 1st ace, the moment gets seared into memory forever. For Isabelle Bourque, it got broadcast live.

We’ll never get to see how it got into the basket, but her reaction is priceless.

👉 Powergrip’s Highlight: Discmania S-Line DD (11|6|-3|2)
It’s been 4 years since the DD has been discontinued.

Now, it’s back and flippier than ever. Joining the S-Line stock runs, the DD is retooled and manufactured at Discmania’s Swedish facility.

Going back to its old Innova days, the Out-of-Production DD (11|5|0|2) was a lot more stable. Now, it’s taken a complete 180 to become the most US driver in Discmania’s Originals Lineup.

It’s perfect for pure distance drives and taking advantage of tailwinds. For those who haven’t graduated from 9-speeds, this is the ideal transition to distance drivers.

The 11-speed rim won’t feel oversized, and the 6-glide will make for effortless throws. Starting tomorrow (9/13) at 11 AM ET, you can get your hands on Discmania’s latest reinvention.

OFF-WEEK & PLAYOFFS
Random Dubs

1️⃣ There’s been a lot to celebrate this “off-week”…

  • Discmaniacs crowned 2 champions of their own.

  • The awful heatwave is tapering off.

  • My fantasy football team only has one injury.

It’s been a good weekend. But while we were all busy balancing watching disc golf, playing disc golf, and the 1st weekend of football, A-Tiers were being won…

To keep the competitive juices flowing, several touring pros played in The Hollows Fall Classic just 80 miles north of Maple Hill. Designed by Eric McCabe, the pair of public courses were classic woods golf.

In MPO, Parker Welck (DDO Champ) took it down with 5 strokes to spare over Nikko Locastro & Andrew Presnell. In FPO, Ohn Scoggins won by 9 strokes just 9 days after dropping out of Worlds.

After the win, she said her game is only feeling about 65% back. Her BH throws still hurt, but there’s nothing that will stop her from playing in 2 days.

2️⃣ Yes, you heard it correctly. The MVP Open starts on Thursday, and as with every year, there’s much fanfare leading up to the premier event at the World’s #1 course - Maple Hill.

This past Friday, the inaugural Glitch World Championships went down. It was a Glitch-only 1 rounder where non-MVP pros (Gannon Buhr, Cole Redalen, & Matty O) had some fun.

One card was filmed by Gatekeeper Media which will be released in the coming days. But if you’re antsy and want to know who won, then here are the results (Spoiler: It wasn’t Simon).

Next up is some audience participation. On Friday, there will be a competition where 16 pros will face off for $15k while winning fans $5k.

Half of the participants have already been selected through UDisc’s Precision Power Index standings. But the MVP Open needs your help in selecting 8 more… Cast your vote now.
