RESULTS - 🏆ISAAC ROBINSON & KRISTIN TATTAR

With Worlds week a wrap, the season is almost over even though it feels like it just started. In no particular order, here are the storylines you should remember or you may have missed:

1 - Smugglers’ Notch is a class above the rest.

It’s hard to ask for a better backdrop to the most important event all year. Behind the 36 unique holes, the Green Mountains were just the icing on the cake.

Most days, Smuggs maxed out their 3k capacity with fans trying to soak in the spectacle. And the pros did their best to entertain by shredding new records into the scoreable courses.

This place is truly one of the great assets of our sport with its ability to host and test the best of the best. Thankfully, this will not be the last time…

I anticipate many more Majors here over the next 20-30 years if all goes well.

Jeff Spring (TD & DGPT CEO)

2 - The Pre-Tattar era is over.

Towering over the field, Tattar went back to back. Her complete game and consistency are pushing the boundaries of FPO.

She doesn’t have a single skill that’s #1, but when you put them together, then you get routine greatness. Even against the best version of Mi$$y Gannon, Tattar didn’t falter.

Like many have said all season, the field needs to take notice now. They have the rare opportunity to follow the path she’s paved and hopefully push past it.

By becoming 2x World Champ, she’s breaking the mold:

  • 5th career Major title

  • The first FPO to win 4 consecutive Majors in over 20 years

  • Since Val Jenkins in 2009, the first back-to-back FPO Worlds Champ

  • Since her 8th finish here at the 2018 Worlds, she hasn’t finished worse than 6th in any DGPT event

  • Next on her list is the calendar Grand Slam, which could happen in 2.5 weeks at USWDGC

With all these accomplishments, there’s one more that would forever change the game. Could she become the 1st FPO to reach 1000-rated?

She showed early signs with her incredible 1st two rounds (1034 & 1039), but she ended with a 1007 event rating. At this rate, it will take more time.

But if it’s going to be done, Tattar’s the one to do it.

3 - The transition of power from the old to the new guard.

Even with all odds against it, fans still clutched onto the hope of a McBeast comeback. But sadly, the era of his dominance came to a close on Sunday.

Battling injury, age, and the competitive field, it was no longer Mr. 6x’s moment to shine. That now belongs to Isaac Robinson for the next 12 months.

Robinson’s journey to earning the title had some drama but was mostly unflashy. Up until the actual weekend, he was a silent killer moving up the leaderboard.

Then Saturday kicked off with Backpack Gate, and it was downhill from there. He made earning a World title look almost easy.

Some even called it “boring”, but he was clearly the best player of the week. He may even be the best player of the year…

Now with 2 Majors wins, 2nd in DGPT standings, and $30k richer, he’s in the POTY hunt. His eyes are set on USDGC in 4 weeks, and he’s a clear contender amongst the new guard of Buhr, AB, and Klein.

4 - Things that weren’t on my Worlds Bingo card.

As with every Worlds, there are twists and turns that no one predicts. While every square of Philo Bingo got filled, here are the unexpected events:

  • After 2 years off Tour, Grady Shue goes from pouring beers to leading Worlds after Round 2. His 17th finish was the biggest payday ($1.8k) of his season

  • For the 1st time in her career, Ohn Scoggins DNF’d after Thursday’s round. Hopefully, the pain in her throwing hand and arm will improve and she can finish out her season

  • With 36 holes left, Eagle McMahon was 10 strokes back and considered out of it. He went on to shoot the Fox Run record (-14, 1092 rated) then backed it up again to finish in 3rd

  • For the 2nd year in a row, the top 5 finishers in FPO had the same people (Tattar, Gannon, Handley, Salonen, & Blomroos)

  • Chris Dickerson hits trees with more than his discs

As for things on my Bingo card, this one still fills the free space:

HIGHLIGHTS

The baskets caught aces left and right over the weekend. Nate Sexton skipped one of his Firebirds into Fox Run’s Hole 15 on Thursday.

Then on Saturday, Ali Smith surprised everyone including herself as her 157g DGA ProLine Sail hit the perfect line into chains.

👉 Powergrip’s Highlight: MVP & Axiom Restock
Ever since Simon’s latest announcement, everyone’s got a hankering for some GYRO plastic.

Lucky for you (and me), Powergrip USA just posted a HEFTY restock from Michigan’s finest manufacturer. Here are some things sitting in my cart:

  • Everything from the Axiom lineup came in with crazy swirly rims. It’s the most colorful batch they’ve gotten in

  • Axiom Insanity (9|5|-2|1.5) - This mold pops up as a highly recommended US fairway for good reason. It’s a staple in my bag for both BH and FH

  • Glow season is in full swing and Eclipse is the best plastic on the market. Snag a Proxy (3|3|-1|0.5), Reactor (5|5|-0.5|1.5), or even a glow mini

  • Don’t forget a UV flashlight to bring your Eclipse discs to life

FORM TIPS & COURSE CLEANUP
Random Dubs

1️⃣ Remember when Overthrow DG busted the myth of the back leg? They proved that it doesn’t do a whole lot on the brace.

It actually acts as a passive counterbalance for your momentum. On YouTube, Trebuchet Disc Golf has a simple drill to understand that counterbalance feeling.

  1. Put your weight into a “simulated” brace on only your front foot

  2. In a hyzer tilt swing, use your back leg as a counterbalance to not fall over

  3. Develop the drill farther by touching your back foot and drifting it forward acting only as a counterbalance

Watch his full video to understand how to take this simplified drill farther into a realistic swing.

2️⃣ Cale “Dr. Smooth” Leiviska is expanding his impact on Minnesota. Last week, he announced his and Tom Odegaard’s takeover of the formerly named VisionQuest course.

Located in Oak Grove, MN, VisionQuest was an “extremely ambitious project” by Mike Rivard. In 2016, he and his crew dug the ponds themselves and wanted to host premier events.

It eventually took a backseat and became unplayable over the years. Now, Leiviska has plans to rename, redesign, and reopen the course as the “Airborn Disc Golf Hollows.”
