Form MythBusters: Overthrow Edition

Recently, Mikey and Josh from Overthrow DG have been busting myths left and right. They’ve debunked common form tips that have spread like wildfire.

Myth #1: Your trailing arm/shoulder should drive the rotation of the throw forward.

The truth: It doesn’t. Its purpose is to work in tandem with your lead arm, otherwise, it’ll get in the way and never allow the disc to enter the power pocket.

The main things to remember with your trailing arm are…

  • It keeps balance in the backswing and helps coil the shoulders

  • In the downswing, the trailing elbow needs to be tight to your body

  • The disc should get into the power pocket before the trailing shoulder comes through

Wrong vs. Right

Myth #2: The brace comes from a loaded-up back leg that twists and transfers into the front foot.

The truth: The back leg doesn’t do a whole lot. The brace is about applying as much pressure onto the front foot as possible.

As your weight moves forward through the swing, the front foot creates resisting power that transfers into the throw. Here are two drills to help you understand the ever-elusive brace:

Find good balance as you slide

Clear the hip, push out, then drench someone

TOUR COVERAGE
50th American Flying Disc Open (Silver)

PREVIEW (8/25-27)

I hope you brought your appetite, cause after 3 straight weeks of big events, we’ve got a pre-Worlds appetizer. As the 2nd to last Silver, this oldest running tournament will do its best to entertain.

But with its timing in the season, the field is lackluster. While others are disappointed, let’s consider it a glass-half-full situation.

An amazing East Coast course will be featured. Lesser known players will get time in the valuable spotlight. And incredible disc golf will be played.

For 3 days, the Parma DGC will be the setting. This classic course lies on a riverbed just outside of Rochester, NY, and has a lengthy history of significant events.

9 years ago, it was a National Tour stop that had generational greats duking it out. To name a few, Feldberg, Lizotte, McBeth, Wysocki, and even Nate Doss competed in the 40th Flying Disc Open.

But this property looks a whole lot different than that era. In anticipation of this event, the Greater Rochester DG Club has completely revamped the layout.

It’s one of the shorter courses on Tour, but as a mixed-use park, it has the perfect balance between super technical shots and bomber drives.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Certainly, last week was a fluke for the World’s highest-rated player Manabu Kajiyama, right? There’s no way he can miss cash and undershoot his rating by 64 points again, right?

It’s redemption week for Japan’s star, and he’ll have time to shine in this smaller field. Other than him, I’ve got my fingers crossed for Matty O to get his 1st Tour win of the season.

He’s got a few woods specialists (Ezra Robinson & Big Jerm) to fend off, but his game suits up perfectly for this track. Tune in live on DGN or post on CCDG starting tomorrow.

POWERED BY POWERGRIP USA
Simon Says Buy Gyro

After a 6 month wait, it finally happened… Simon Lizotte dropped an updated In The Bag video.

Not a ton has changed, but clearly, whatever he’s got in there is good enough to win $15k at DGLO. Powergrip USA has his latest crushes in stock now

  • MVP Spin (2.5|4|-2|0) - This is his go-to woods disc. Out of the box, it’s the perfectly US throwing putter. “It never even wants to go left... It just wants to turn.”

  • MVP Matrix (5|4|-1|2) - Recently made a comeback to his bag, and fills a midrange gap. “Straight, slightly OS, and right between the Hex and Pyro.”

  • Axiom Fireball (9|3.5|0|3.5) - Most OS fairway in his bag that only comes out for FH rollers or upshots. “This is a disc you just need for windy days and maybe for some shorter spike hyzer upshots.”

  • MVP Wave (11|5|-2.5|2) - At Simon’s arm speed, this is a roller disc. “For normal throwers, it’s kinda that sweet spot where you throw it flat, and give you some turn, and it’ll fade out in the end.”

Add some more GYRO to your bag and rejoice every time someone says, “Wow! What disc was that?” Shop Powergrip USA for all your disc needs.

WORLD RECORD & TWO TRUTHS
Random Dubs

1️⃣ Recently, Scott Stokely has been on a tear and playing some of his best golf. But you won’t find him on the US Tour any time soon, as he’s been touring the world on his own.

Stokely competed in 5 events on the Euro Tour these past few months. He managed to finish in the Top 5 three times and shot three rounds that were over 1050 rated.

Now in Romania, he’s on a mission to complete a made-up 54,000ft long hole with almost 8,000ft of elevation gain. Why’s he doing this? I have zero clue, but I guess it’s good content.

2️⃣ Let’s play a game: Two Truths and a Lie

  1. Ella Hansen is one of the farthest-throwing FPO players.

  2. She has never won a Pro Tour event.

  3. She has 3 aces in her short 3.5-year career.

That’s right. During a Discmania practice round, Ella admitted to never throwing an ace.

Clearly, she’s overdue, and you know what they say… once you get that 1st one, then they come quick and often. So she’ll be smashing chains like Vinny in no time.
